Visiting the Sex Museum in Amsterdam

April 19, 2016 by Ulla

We were spending a few days in Amsterdam and of cause browsing through the “what to do” tourist brochure. We stumbled over “The Temple of Venus”. What on earth could this be? Well guess what it is a most famous sex museum in the heart of Amsterdam city. We were both excited straight away in particular Peder as he thought it was an interactive museum! Anyway we both wanted to have a closer look into the world of sex. What better than to visit a sex museum and staying in the red light district.

The museum has a rich and interesting collection of artefacts, unique objects and rare old photographs. The museum has been up and running for more than 20 years by now and I guess heaps of people have been dwelling at the master pieces on display. There are some very amusing items and some absolutely intriguing. By the end of our visit we both felt very inspired and had also gained new knowledge.

There is loads of stuff for the brain to catalogue like Marilyn Monroe with air being pumped under her skirt. Two huge plastic phalluses standing erect with incorporated seats underneath to sit and indulge. This actually makes a good photo. Small rooms with muffled noises from speakers help to spark your imagination. In the room of Marquis de Sade you will hear sounds of a steam engine mixed with female screams of joy. Some dummy men and women jump into action as you walk past which makes it a very entertaining visit. There are lots of carvings, drawings even sexy underwear from the 1930ties to admire. Put yourself in the picture.
